Pir Sultan Abdal (maiden surname Haydar) is an important religious figure in Alevism, believed to be of Turkmen origin and thought to have been born in the village of Banaz in the Sivas province of present-day Turkey. He is considered a legend among his followers. His life has been reconstructed from folkloric sources, particularly the religious poems believed to be written by him and passed down by ashiks. Pir Sultan Abdal was a famous folk poet and bard who lived in the 16th century. He was of Alevi origin. Information about his life is primarily obtained from his poems, stories passed down through generations, and rumors. Pir Sultan Abdal is one of the bards referred to as the "Seven Great Ones" by Alevi communities.
