The double-headed eagle is a historical figure adopted by many different cultures across Eurasia. It first appeared in Mesopotamia around 3000-2000 BCE and later spread throughout Central Asia. As it reached Anatolia, Turkic civilizations embraced it, attributing various symbolic meanings. In Central Asia, the double-headed eagle was crafted as a talisman, amulet, and symbol of light and the sun, also representing grandeur and sovereignty. It appeared on coins as an emblem for some rulers and as a motif reinforcing authority for others. The Artuqid coins and Seljuk structures in Anatolia featured the double eagle on walls, mosques, madrasas, and palaces as a protective and dominant symbol against evil forces. Meanwhile, the Byzantines also used this motif to symbolize the unity of state and church under one rule. From the 14th century onward, it became the coat of arms for Holy Roman Emperors and later a nobility symbol in Europe, appearing in the imperial emblems of Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Russia.
